Get Ready for an Earthquake: The Life Backpack for Pets

The SGIRPC of Mexico City urges owners to prepare the 'Pet-taka' with essential supplies and care for their pets in case of earthquakes.

Get Ready for an Earthquake: The Life Backpack for Pets

The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) of Mexico City recommends that pet owners prepare a Pet-taka, a life backpack to protect and care for their companion animals in case of earthquakes or emergencies. This bag should contain essential items such as a blanket, a booklet with the pet's veterinary records, a toy to grab their attention if they wander off, a food dish, medications if necessary, biodegradable bags, a leash, and water and food in easy-to-open containers.

According to the SGIRPC, the information included in the life backpack should contain the pet's name, age, breed, and registration number (RUAC). In the event of an earthquake, it is crucial to look for the animal's cage, aquarium, or leash to contain them. If it is a free animal, it should be called to evacuate or sheltered in the least risky area.

The SGIRPC emphasizes the importance of safeguarding pets in disaster situations, such as earthquakes, fires, or other emergencies. The unpredictability of these events highlights the need for a risk prevention plan that includes pets, which are considered family members.

The Pet-taka is a fundamental part of this plan and should be made of waterproof materials and contain water, food, medications, among other basic items for the animal's well-being. It is essential to keep this life bag for pets updated as part of the preparation for potential emergencies and natural disasters.
